MUSEU DEL MODERNISME DE BARCELONA

The new Museu del Modernisme opened in 2010. It is housed in a former textile factory in the centre of Barcelona, and offers visitors the chance to enjoy a cultural centre dedicated exclusively to modernista art.

ADVANTAGES:

The holdings of the new Museu del Modernisme de Barcelona come from the private collection that two Barcelona antique dealers, Fernando Pinós and María Guirao, have amassed during their 40 years in the business. The museum is dedicated exclusively to Catalonia's home-grown art-nouveau movement, modernisme. The collection on shows consists of 350 works by 42 of the most representative modernista artists, including Joan Busquets, Ramón Casas, Antoni Gaudí, Gaspar Homar, Josep Llimona, Joaquim Mir and Puig i Cadafalch, in their different disciplines: painting, sculpture, furniture and the decorative arts.

The Museu de Modernisme de Barcelona is housed in a centrally located modernista building designed by the architect Enric Sagnier. The Catalan vaults were restored and the original flooring on the ground floor preserved as part of the refurbishment project to house the museum. It has a floor space of 1,000m2. The top floor of the Museu showcases the furniture and decorative arts and has a room dedicated to Antoni Gaudi. The ground floor displays paintings, sculptures and stained glass.

PALAU BARÓ DE QUADRAS

The Palau Baró de Quadras is both a neo-Gothic mansion and a modernista-style block of flats. An imaginative building with an eclectic, refined décor that changes according to the façade you view it from.

ADVANTAGES:

In 1900 the Baron de Quadras commissioned Josep Puig i Cadafalch to refurbish a residential block on Barcelona’s Carrer Rosselló. No sooner said than done: the modernista architect radically transformed the building, providing it with two distinct façades that make it truly unique.

When viewed from the Avinguda Diagonal, the building is reminiscent of the Gothic palaces of northern Europe, its style highlighting the noble character of the building. The long balcony, with its busts of eminent medieval and Renaissance figures, the mansards on the upper floor, and the floral motifs and heraldic shields, are fully in keeping with the medieval European style. The façade on carrer Rosselló retains some elements of the original building, decorated in the modernista style.

Inside the palace, the most eclectic decorations predominate, with a combination of different styles. For instance, we see the clear influence of neo-Gothic on the grand staircase and the wrought-iron entrance door. The mosaics, sgraffito work and multi-coloured woodwork, are reminiscent of the neo-Arabic style. In a nutshell, this is a building full of surprises and details you are bound to fall in love with.

TORRE BELLESGUARD

The Torre Bellesguard, one of Gaudí's less well-known Barcelona buildings, now, open to the public.

ADVANTAGES:

The Torre Bellesguard, which is currently owned by the Guilera family who still live in part of the house, was designed by Antoni Gaudí and built between 1900 and 1909. The building has straight lines which were seldom seen in his work and was inspired by the medieval castle where King Martin the Humane once lived, parts of which can still be seen in the gardens of the house.

The history of Bellesguard is closely linked to the history of Catalonia as it dates back to the Middle ages when Martin the Humane gave the site its current name and built his home there. It was also the place where one of Catalonia's most famous bandits, Serrallonga, used to hide out after committing his crimes, and also played an important role in the historic events of 1714.

The building takes its name from its strategic position and magnificent views – in Catalan "Bellesguard" means "beautiful views" or "good viewing point".

Bellesguard and the crypt of the Colonia Güell are buildings which Gaudí used as test beds for the architectural solutions he would later apply to the Sagrada Familia.

CASA AMATLLER

The Casa Amatller stands in the centre of the Catalan capital. Designed by the architect Puig i Cadafalch, together with Gaudí's Casa Batlló and Domènech i Montaner's Casa Lleó Morera, it is part of the famous "Manzana de la Discordia", or "Block of Discord". Find out why and relive the atmosphere of Barcelona's affluent, art nouveau heyday!.

ADVANTAGES:

The chocolate manufacturer Antoni Amatller bought a property at 101 (later 41) Passeig de Gràcia: a house with a ground floor and four upper storeys with a garden. Amatller commissioned Josep Puig i Cadafalch to refurbish the property and that's how the story of one of the city's most iconic buildings began.

The architect's intervention gave rise to a radical transformation of the building. Puig i Cadafalch skilfully combined Catalonia's home-grown art nouveau style, modernisme, based on the use of traditional arts and crafts, with a neo-Gothic style and an unusual stepped cornice inspired by the houses of the Netherlands. Some of the finest artists of the time, including Jujol, worked with Puig i Cadafalch on the project.

The house retains all its original furnishings and decoration, as well as an outstanding archaeological glass collection. Antoni Amatller was not only a chocolatier, his chocolates are still being made today. At the end of the tour you can enjoy an exclusive tasting of thick hot chocolate with bread in the hall of the Casa Amatller.
